In a world increasingly reliant on vehicles, Keep Middlesex Moving (KMM) champions a vision where transportation is not just possible, but accessible, sustainable and safe for all.
“We’re here to implement transportation solutions and programs to get people from point A to point B in a safe, reliable and accessible way,” said Executive Director Brian Tobin.
Founded 36 years ago, KMM plays a vital role in the Middlesex County community, assisting residents, workers, and visitors alike. Whether it is helping hospital workers get to their shifts, Rutgers students reaching campus, or ensuring safe routes to school, KMM strives to “assist people in any way possible,” emphasized Tobin.
The non-profit is entirely funded by grants and focuses on a variety of initiatives, including promoting safe cycling and walking to school through programs such as travel training; identifying and addressing transportation barriers faced by residents; and encouraging carpooling and the use of public transportation.
KMM promotes the use of electric vehicles and is working to expand electric vehicle infrastructure throughout the county.
The transportation organization is a strong advocate for Vision Zero, an approach to traffic safety that aspires to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries. This program goes beyond simply reacting to accidents; it represents a shift in how transportation systems are designed, operated and used.
Middlesex County became the first in the state to adopt a county-wide Vision Zero Action Plan in 2022. This plan outlines a comprehensive strategy for crash prevention, encompassing engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, continual evaluation and strategic partnerships.
Vision Zero acknowledges that everyone who uses the road system has a role to play in ensuring safety. This includes drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, road designers and policymakers. By analyzing crash data, transportation officials can identify high-risk areas and implement targeted safety measures.
Through its commitment to Vision Zero, KMM is partnering with the Middlesex County Department of Transportation to build a safer, more inclusive transportation system for everyone who lives, works and visits the region.
KMM collaborates with NJ Transit, Middlesex College, Rutgers University and local businesses to provide reliable, safe and accessible transportation options. The organization offers a “Ticket to Work” program that provides free bus tickets to residents seeking employment along transit routes and offsets transportation costs until employees receive their first paycheck.
They also support the Ticket to School program, which helps connect Middlesex College students to public transit, alleviating transportation challenges to education.
