The National Federation of Retailers revised its annual holiday sales outlook, expecting sales to rise 3.8 percent over last year, instead of the 2.9 percent increase originally predicted.
That's left New Jersey retailers optimistic about the final weekend of holiday shopping in 2011, according to John Holub, president of the New Jersey Retail Merchant Association.
"We're certainly encouraged with the revision for the overall holiday sales projections, up a full point," Holub said.
Holub said a survey conducted by NFR on Dec. 15 showed more people had shopping to complete at that point than in 2010, meaning retailers could expect the steady flow of customers to continue.
"They've been doing some pretty aggressive promotions, and I think you'll see that to the very end," Holub said.
Wayne-based Toys R Us announced Thursday a two-day sale Friday and Saturday, and that the stores will remain open 24 hours a day through Christmas Eve. Toys R Us already has promised consumers that it would restock the most popular toys as needed throughout the country.
